Reaching the municipality of Nordeste, entering the parish of Salga, we suggest a detour to Salto da Farinha and to the view point of Ponta do Estorninho. If you entering the parish please visit the handicraft shop – A folha de milho to enjoy the artisan’s work. Proceed towards the village of Nordeste. Stop in
the parish of Achadinha (home town of the well known writer João de Melo which has been an inspiration to most of his work) admire the Padrão das almas and the Liberal’s monument, Should you be interested in sacred art, please visit the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário.
Embark yourself on the road and stop at the Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões between the parishes of Achada and Achadinha to observe the existing waterfall and a core of watermills that are Azores heritage. After entering the parish of Achada, descent to the churchyard view point to admire the panoramic view over the north coast of the island. Take this advantage to visit the little ethnographic museum nearby. After proceed to Santana (that congregates the communities of Feteira Grande and Feteira Pequena). In Feteira Grande there is a worth seeing viewpoint where the highest point of the island can be observed – Pico da Vara. Resume your tour towards the village of Nordeste, making a stopover the viewpoint of Vigia das baleias (a whale spotting point). If you wish to climb Pico da Vara, in Algarvia there’s the best access to it.
Further more in Lomba da Fazenda descend to the Endemic Park (native flora park) and enjoy its vegetation and ocean view.
In the village of Nordeste, the fishing port and the lighthouse of Arnel (the oldest of the Azores), the House of Labor (handicraft centre), the Ethnographic Museum, the mother church of Saint George, and the Forest Park and Nursery are worth while seeing.
And last but not least, visit the stunning viewpoints of Nordeste such as: Pico do Bartolomeu, Tronqueira, Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, towards the south route. The forest reserve of Cancela do Cinzeiro and the Environmental Centre of Priolo (the azoren bullfinch) can be an interesting option accessed by the community of Pedreira.
