This trail begins in Algarvia and ends in Pico da Vara (the highest point on the island of São Miguel: 1,103m). These trails were used in the past to reach the scrubland where charcoal was produced and cattle grazed.
The trail begins through a cedar wood. On days when it is very damp it is advisable to keep to the right close to the cedars because the track can become very slippery in the middle.
After about 1 km walking uphill, the cedar wood gives way to a landscape of low-lying, plants, mainly grasses, which give the plateau its name: Graminhais.
Further on you will come to a fork in the track where you should turn left for Pico da Vara. From this point on you will be able to see the south coast of São Miguel. After around 500 m you will come to the spot marked to show where a French plane crashed in 1949.
