São Pedro do Nordestino has a temple of great religious devotion to the inhabitants of São Miguel. This is the Church of Our Lady of Sorrow (“Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Pranto”), located in a green pasture near the sea. This building has a long history of at least five centuries, dating its last reconstruction to the year of 1895.
According to the legend, after the famous earthquake of 1522, the Virgin Mary appeared to a young shepherd, announcing that Ponta Delgada would be punished with a plague and asked him to build a chapel dedicated to her. The scared population then raised a temple to the Virgin Mary in the invocation of the Our Lady of Sorrow. Proven fact or not, the truth is that this small temple has survived over time and continues to be the subject of pilgrimages.
